A spin around Vegas with BMW's self-driving 5 series

One of the main themes of this year’s CES in Las Vegas was the clear fact that so many different companies, not all car manufacturers, are now working on autonomous driving solutions.

A far cry from the usual state of affairs where the automotive world is way behind in terms of tech, in 2017 it seems that the collective car industry, rather than merely a few brave pioneers, has raised its game considerably.

BMW announced at the trade show that, as well as working with Mobileye and Intel, it wanted to start a collaboration to share data and development expertise with competitors to expedite the adoption of the driverless car.

The German brand plans to put a fleet of 40 autonomous test vehicles on the roads by the second half of this year, so WIRED decided to take a test drive in BMW’s latest iteration of its autonomous technology at the show, Personal Co-Pilot, which – in an unexpected twofer – just so happened to be built into the brand new 5 Series.
